The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the most popular mobile phones ever made and continues to sell millions of handsets across the world.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the larger mobile phones on the market. This is an inevitable consequence of the size of the screen which at 5 inches still happens to be one of the largest screens in a mobile phone on the market today.
The phone has a plastic body with a fine diamond pattern that is underneath the gloss finish. This undoubtedly helps with handling the phone and adds nice detail. Another welcome consequence of this finish is that it helps to avoid the unwelcome appearance of fingerprints on the phone.
The screen is certainly the dominant factor in the design of the phone. At its closest to the edge of the phone, the screen is just 2.5mm away. This certainly helps to maximise the space within the width of the phone but any further and there would be a serious concern about the screen surviving if the phone was accidently dropped.
The S4 comes in the standard colours - blue, black, white, grey and also special editions in red and purple.
The screen is certainly the main event when it comes to this phone. It is a 5 inch Super AMOLED full HD, 1920 by 1090 display with a 441 pixels per inch resolution (the PPI is actually higher in the S4 than the S5 phone).
Colours are vivid from a variety of viewing angles and the contrast is amazing. The S4 can be used very successfully as a mini media device as streaming and watching movies is a breeze and web pages, images, and apps all look amazing. A wonderful screen.
The S4 runs a speedy quad-core processor at 1.9GHz and has 2GB of RAM. The high level processor and amount of RAM within the phone means that even the most intensive tasks run smoothly with a lack of lag.
The on-board memory is specified as a basic 16GB, but when all the software is taken into account the actual space that is allowed for storage on the phone is little more than 8GB. This is something that you would need to take into account beforehand. Although the fact that there is a memory card slot on the phone that will allow you to add additional storage space to the phone renders the lack of storage as less of an issue - up to 64GB memory cards can be added to some S4 models.
The latest model, the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE is a 4G enabled phone so if you want to take advantage of the 4G mobile network in the UK you would need to ensure that the phone was an "LTE" edition.
The rear facing camera is a 13 megapixel affair with LED flash which produces stunning images in varying light levels.
There is a useful burst feature on the camera which allows you to take a flurry of 20 photos by keeping the shutter button held down.
A nice camera feature is the use of dual shots. This means that you can take photos using the rear facing and front facing camera at the same time and the software will then fit the images together into one image. So far example you could take a picture of a landmark and have a selfie superimposed in front of it.
As well as an excellent camera for still shots you also have a video recording option that will record in full 1080p HD video.
The battery life is typically a strong point for Samsung phones running Android as an operating system and the S4 is no different. There is a 2,600 mAh capacity battery that is supplied as standard and as is the case with the other top end Samsung phones it is possible to remove the battery easily in case of failure or if you want to add a spare battery to the phone that is fully charged.
According to a consumer test by Which? the battery performance on the Samsung Galaxy S4 was better than the performance of the iPhone 5s on both continuous phone call tests and web browsing tests - by around 30% more in both instances.
In many ways the Samsung Galaxy S4 was the first credible rival to the iPhone models when it was launched. Since then Samsung had added to their range but the S4 is still an extremely popular, powerful and fully featured phone with very few weaknesses at all.
Once the Galaxy S5 was launched it led to a number of promotions on the S4 which means you can get the amazing S4 on contract at a very affordable price. If you have bad credit and you want a fully featured smartphone for a cheap price then the Galaxy S4 would be a very good choice (particularly if you were to consider a reconditioned model as that would make the price even cheaper).
