The latest incarnation of the popular Galaxy Note range of phones from Samsung is the Note 3 which further builds on the excellence of the previous Galaxy Note phones.
APPEARANCE
To really do justice to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 you need to physically hold the device. Looking at pictures of the phone don't quite give you feeling of scale that you get from actually holding and operating the phone. The original Galaxy Note was revolutionary in that it had the biggest screen of any phone at the time. The Note 3 is no different and continues the tradition of the Phablet - part tablet, part phone.
The 5.7 inch screen is the star of the show with it reaching so far to the edges of the phone that the bezel on each side is virtually hidden. There is a nice band of chrome that surrounds the sides of the phone and it is made from the typical plastic that Samsung tend to use, with one exception. The removable back seems to have been made with some sort of faux-leather type material. Given your point of view this gives the phone a more premium, business-like feel to it. It certainly makes holding the phone a more tactile experience which is surely a good thing when holding such a large phone in one hand.
There are three colours to choose from, these being white, gold and a quite striking red.
SCREEN
The display on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is nothing short of amazing. The 5.7 inch Super AMOLED screen has a full HD 1920 by 1080 resolution that provides a pixel density of 386 ppi. The use of Super AMOLED screens has been a particular success for Samsung because they have been proven to display rich, deep blacks which in turn produces extremely vibrant colours. The technology that produces this also leads to a reduction in power consumption which is a double win for Samsung.
Given the size of the screen you can use the Note 3 very comfortably as a media device to watch movies or videos. It is after all a slightly smaller version of a tablet computer.
PERFORMANCE
Technically the Note 3 is a power packed phone. It comes as standard in the UK with a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor that runs at 2.3GHz and it has a generous 3GB of RAM which is an improvement over the Galaxy S5. With these specifications you will find it difficult to trouble the phone with any intensive task such as streaming content, browsing the web, etc. There doesn't seem to be any lag whatsoever with whatever task you throw at it.
With the 4G LTE as standard on the phone, if you have a 4G enabled contract you will notice that web pages load in an instant and downloads are lightening quick on this phone.
There are genuinely few phones our there at the moment that can match the startling performance of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
CAMERA
The camera on the Note 3 consists of a 13 MP rear camera with a single LED flash that also records in full HD 1080p and also features 4k video capture. On the front there is a 2 MP camera.
The camera features are very similar to the highly rated Galaxy S5 and as a point and shoot camera phone it is hard to beat. Image stabilisation is excellent and the sensor on the phone is capable of picking up clear and detailed objects in bright sunlight and dimly lit conditions.
BATTERY
The size of the battery on the Note 3 at 3,200mAh is one of the largest on the market and as such it will easily outlast any type of iPhone. There is also the added bonus that the battery is easily removable so replacing for a new battery is a piece of cake.
The Note 3 is one of the few top end smartphones that can genuinely last for in excess of a day without the need for it to be re-charged even when the phone is used heavily.
The addition of the much praised ultra-power saving mode makes this phone an incredible high performance phone that can last for several days on a single charge.
OTHER FEATURES
The Note 3 comes equipped with its own stylus called the S Pen. This shouldn't be consigned as simply a gimmick, the S Pen does actually reproduce handwriting accurately on screen so if you need to scribble down a note, image or annotation it will do the job admirably well. As to be expected there are a range of apps and options that cater to the operation of the S Pen. Too many to mention here!
The phone comes with 32GB or 64GB of storage as standard but this can be expanded by adding a memory card up to another 64GB.
OVERALL
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is another winning phone from Samsung. Specifications wise there are few phones that can match it and the large vibrant screen is truly stunning.
Operating the phone with one hand can be a slight struggle for those with smaller sized hands but this is the trade-off that has to be accepted if you want the functionality of the large screen.
The S Pen is a genuinely novel introduction to the phone and can be a very useful tool.
If you are in the market for a new phone and a tablet you could get the Note 3 and happily use it as both a phone and tablet - it is that good. Highly recommended.
